Google has experimentally launched a new directory assistance service that makes use of voice recognition for traditional 411 services. The news is of particular interest given the timing: Google rival Microsoft recently acquired voice-enabled search firm TellMe Networks for $800 million. In order to use the new Google service, just call 1-800-GOOG-411 from any phone. Once connected, a user can say the name of a business or use a keyword. Once the listing is found, users will be connected free of charge to that business. Users can also have the details sent to their mobile via SMS by saying "text message" into the phone. These voice-enabled local search services could one day pose a serious threat to the budding mobile search opportunity.

I tried a couple of listings and none came up. It is experimental...

Fon Turns One, Hands Out 10,000 Routers

Fon is giving away 10,000 La Fonera routers to US residents for its birthday: The Spanish-based firm is building a hybrid of grassroots and operator-backed Wi-Fi locations and hotspots worldwide. The router is generally pretty cheap—about US$30 and €30—but this removes any barrier.
As usual, I do complain about Martin Varsavsky’s characterization of their network as “on our way to becoming the largest Wi-Fi network [in] America” with 18,000 “Foneras ordered” because a Fon node isn’t equivalent to most public hotspots. Some Fon nodes are identical to hotspots and “worth” as much in an apples-to-apples “largest Wi-Fi network” comparison. Others aren’t. But I don’t think Fon should be as hung up about being large; they should be concerned about being dense, and dense in the right areas.
Fon nodes in Seattle, for instance, are largely in residential neighborhoods, apparently in people’s homes. In dense areas, that means that neighbors, especially in apartment buildings, will be able to use those Fon locations. But Fon doesn’t encourage regular use, purposely pricing its day charge at about US-two-bucks, varying depending on locality. Fon wants its users to buy broadband lines from operators, and hopes that casual use and other forms of use (not fully explained yet, but VoIP and UMA are certainly components) will increase broadband lines rather than replace them. There has to be a backhaul, although Fon is backhaul agnostic.
For Fon locations that are in more heavily trafficked or traditional hotspot locations, Fon does offer the advantage of community (existing users seeking out the location) and simple revenue collection (for hotspots run in the Bill mode). Fon is certainly among the simplest and cheapest way to set up a hotspot with a small bar of entry, although competitors like LessNetworks and now Whisher have alternatives, neither of which offers the potential for revenue collection (yet).
The terms of the giveaway limits routers one per Fon user or shipping address (US residents and addresses only) until 10,000 are depleted or March 31, 2007. You can register and immediately obtain a router. The routers must be activated as Fon locations, but there’s no stated penalty or terms if you don’t. The terms ask that you pass the router on if you’re not going to use it.

Mountain View-based Google has rolled out new domain name registration services, the firm announced late Thursday night. The new domain name registration features are part of the Google Apps For Your Domain service, and are live as of last night. Arizona-based GoDaddy and Bellevue, Washington-based eNom, a domain name registrar that is now owned by Richard Rosenblatt's Santa Monica-based Demand Media, have partnered with Google to provide the new domain name registration services. Demand Media's Rosenblatt said in a statement that the partnership demonstrates the firm's strategy of building a new media company on top of a leading domain registrar platform. The registration services from Google will be available for a $10 annual fee. The services currently only cover .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info domains.

at the Armory, 145 N. Raymond Ave., Old Pasadena
AIM 6: Technological Pervasions is part of the sixth annual international festival of time-based media presented by the University of Southern California School of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Armory Center for the Arts.
The exhibition at the Armory will include Internet based projects; wireless technology; hardware design; video, digital video and animation; and interactive installations. The show will include works by Deborah Aschheim, Launa Bacon, Paul Chilkov, Dean Mermell, Dennis H. Miller, Henry Reichhold, Daniel Sauter, Marcos Westkamp and Ellen Wetmore. AIM 6: Technological Pervasions will be on view at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 North Raymond Avenue, Old Pasadena. The exhibition runs from February 27 through May 29, 2005. There will be a public opening reception on Saturday, February 26, 7 – 9 pm.
AIM 6: Technological Pervasions received hundreds of entries from around the world. Approximately a dozen of the submitted works will be included in the AIM VI exhibition. Comprising an exhibition of selected entries, satellite lectures and events throughout Los Angeles, AIM 6 explores the ubiquity of surveillance technologies in our everyday lives and explores its impact on privacy, human behavior, and the nature of perception. Exhibited works have been screened by the AIM 6 Screening Committee. The recipients of the Bernay Kurland Grayson Award for Creative Excellence and the AIM Student Award will be announced on the night of the opening.
Showing along with AIM VI is Deborah Aschheim’s interactive installation Neural Architecture no. 5. Aschheim’s series Neural Architecture consists of nervous systems for buildings that articulate the blurring of biology and technology. Neural Architecture no. 5 is made possible in part by the Pasadena Arts Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division.
Now in its sixth year, Art In Motion is the USC School of Fine Arts’ international festival of time-based media. To date, AIM has hosted over 30 exhibitions of outstanding new media work, screenings, lectures, and symposia in locations throughout the United States as well as in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Lima, Peru. AIM is one of only a handful of festivals or programs worldwide that exhibits and offers continual development opportunities for international new media art.
